AviSariel woke in her car, maids clustered on the seat across from her in a heap of skirts and vests, fanning her wildly and chattering in a pitch of panic. Havik Lor sat beside her, holding her upright in his arms, mostly in his lap.

“You fainted,” he explained.

She laughed, more tears spilling over. This wasn’t funny at all, but she couldn’t stop.

“Avi?” Havik said softly, his hand touching her cheek. Was he clammy, or was that her?

The car stopped and the maids flooded out just as she managed to get her mirth under control. She leaned forward, out of Havik Lor’s arms. He tucked strands of hair behind her ear. “Everything is okay.” He said it like he meant it and she jerked away because she knew it wasn’t true.

AviSariel staggered out of the car despite his plea for her to wait. The maids hovered, asking her questions in their soft voices. They had names. She knew them. But she almost never used them. One held the front door and the princess walked into her house in Maggrin.

“Would you like tea in the parlor?” another maid offered as she made her way down the foyer and past the receiving rooms.

“Avi, wait,” Havik Lor persisted, following her in.

She cut a line for the stairs. She wanted her bedroom. She wanted to close the door and hide under her covers. Maybe mother would make apple bread if she said she felt sick today, and cut it in those thick slices with globs of cream. “Go away. I’m staying in for the day.”

The maids tottered with new panic when she lurched up the stairs. Her thoughts came sluggishly, her whole body weighed down. What was she thinking? Oh yes, mother and bread. What nonsense was that? She didn’t have a mother. Did she? How could she not have one?

Havik Lor caught her elbow in a steadying grip, his voice soothing before she could twist away. “Allow me to walk you to your room, Princess.”

She relaxed a little at the title. Yes. She was the princess, like in the fairy tales. She married the prince and lived happily ever after. Tears pricked her eyes because that wasn’t true. The story had been a lie. All of the stories had been lies. She fell into her bed when she reached it and pushed the heels of her palms to her temples. Her head was splitting. She drew ragged breaths and squeezed her eyes shut.

The room trembled around her and wild fear lanced her heart. She could hear the screams outside. She could hear the riots and the short-lived war that ripped the Realm apart. It all started the day the ground shook and the shadow of a dragon cut across the sky.

“Avi,” Havik Lor pleaded and she opened her eyes.

The screaming faded into the silence of her bedroom.

“Did you feel it?”

He looked so worried that she was sure he had. “Feel what?”

“The end of the world.”

His brow pinched and his hand touched her cheek. “I think you’re ill.
